The senatorial candidate of the Social Democratic Party in Imo West, Henry Unaeze, has commended the Independent National Electoral Commission for not issuing a certificate of return to the state governor, Rochas Okorocha.
Unaeze told journalists in Owerri, the state capital, on Wednesday that the process that produced Okorocha as senator-elect for the district did not conform with the provisions of the Electoral Act.
He said the right thing for the commission to do was to fix a date for a supplementary election in the senatorial district.
Unaeze, a former Deputy Defence Adviser, Nigeria High Commission, London, said the claim by the Retuning Officer that he declared Okorocha winner of the election under duress had rubbished the entire process.
He added that most of the senatorial candidates in the district were waiting on INEC to conduct a supplementary election so that a duly elected senator would emerge.
Unaeze said, “INEC should stop keeping mute on Imo West senatorial district. Now that Okorocha has not been given a certificate of return, the right thing to do is to conduct a supplementary election.
“The process that produced Okorocha as a senator-elect was faulty and very illegal.”
