Unidentified armed men on Tuesday reportedly stormed the residential quarters of the Federal Government Girls College in Calabar, Cross River State, leaving one person critically injured.
Angry residents blamed the attack on the unfenced back axis of the institution, where armed bandits easily found their way into the school premises located along the new Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Bypass, 200 metres away from the Calabar head office of the Department of State Services, DSS.

It shares unfenced boundary with Nyangasang community in the Atimbo axis of the metropolis,The Punch gathered, noting that it was not the first time robbers attacked the quarters.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. John Eluu, when contacted, said he was yet to be briefed on the robbery attack, however, a resident, Bassey Okon, who spoke on the incident, said “This kind of attack has been happening over the years.

“Although the school has attempted to fence the boundary, but it is constantly being brought down by unknown persons,” Okon said.

The victim, a teacher in the school, Mr. T.B Samson, was shot on the knee.

He said the robbers gained entrance into his residence after pulling down the burglary in the kitchen.
Lamenting that the robbers were in his apartment for nearly two hours, the teacher said the gunshots in the compound was enough to alert neighbours, including the DSS that something wrong was happening in the institution.

Samson said he immediately rushed to the nearby Airport Police Division along the IBB Way to lay complaints, but was turned back by those he met on duty on the claims that they did not have any vehicle to operate with.

“We went to the Airport Police Division and they said they did not have vehicle and that apart from that, they would not go with me. They said I should go and treat myself that even robbers treat themselves,” he said.

On how it happened, Samson continued, “My son, who was preparing to write exams, called my attention at about 1.30am that some persons were trying to enter the house through the kitchen.

“We went there and peeped through and discovered that they had successfully removed the louvers and were at the verge of bringing down the burglary.

“Somehow, we distracted them and they started firing. They relocated to the sitting room direction and continued firing and one of the bullets hit me on the knee.

“We, my children, aged father and wife crawled to the room while they got in through the kitchen as they went back and this time, they brought down the window protector.

“When they entered, they came straight to locate us because there was blood stains everywhere. They thought they had killed someone. The robbers operated from 1.30am to 2.50am.

“They went away with a plasma television, laptops, iPad, mobile phones and some cash,” Samson added.
