The singer of the popular song, African Queen, while promising to release the shoot of his visit to the camps to raise awareness of the condition of the IDPs at the camps, said the proceed of a concert to be held in Abuja at the weekend will go to UNHCR for the running of the camps.
2Face who visited some IDP camps in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital on the invitation of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), said though he saw trauma in the faces of the IDPs, he equally saw hope of a change in their situation.
Speaking to journalists after visiting the camp, the musician said: “I was at the IDP camp yesterday, I saw sadness in the eyes of these people, I saw sorrow, I saw fear, I saw trauma in their eyes. At the same time I started seeing hope behind the fear and that hope came from the fact that they now have a safe place.
“They now have at least a temporary shelter, they can sleep at night without rain affecting them. They have hope that they are going to get somewhere and we are going to get our lives back.”
On his take away from the visit to the camps, he said: “For me, it was mind blowing. It was a very compelling and emotional journey for me.
“I want to ask every well meaning Nigerian to come out, no matter how you do it and do something, it does not matter how little it is, like for instance now we have a song out “hold my hands” which you can find on any platform, download it and choose it as a ringtone, it will only cost you N50.
“So you do not need to have million of Naira to support the IDPs, we are donating some of the proceeds to UNHCR and I am also doing a concert this weekend in Abuja and all the proceeds goes to UNHCR.”
He added that: “So in my own little way, I am trying to do my best but it cannot be done alone, so I am calling all well meaning Nigerians to come out and support the course of the IDPs.”
He promised to release a video next week “to show some of the emotions I have captured at the camps.”
He however accused government of not doing enough to prevent the ongoing crises all over the country, lamenting that they play politics with almost everything and has added to bring the nation closer to the precipice.
He asked politicians to get their act together as they seems “to have lost the ploy.”
