Eid-el-Kabir: Kano, Gombe, Katsina, others declare school holidays

Kano State mapGovernments of Kano, Gombe, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, Bauchi, Yobe, and Nasarawa States have announced the closure of schools for the Eid-el-Kabir celebration, with the duration of holidays varying across states.

In Kano, the state government directed all public and private primary and secondary schools to go on break from Wednesday, June 4, with boarding students resuming on Sunday, June 16, and day students on Monday, June 17.

A statement signed by the Director of Public Enlightenment at the state Ministry of Education, Balarabe Kiru, advised parents to pick up their children early on Wednesday.

“All parents and guardians are kindly requested to ensure they pick up their children from boarding schools early on the scheduled date,” the statement read.

The ministry also clarified that the Eid break does not alter the 2024/2025 academic calendar.

In Gombe, schools will close on Thursday, June 5, and reopen on Tuesday, June 10, in line with the Federal Government’s public holiday declaration.

The state’s Ministry of Education’s Information Officer, Saidu Malala, confirmed this in a telephone interview.

Similarly, Katsina State declared a seven-day Sallah break for all schools, spanning Wednesday, June 4, to Wednesday, June 11.

The directive, issued by the Director of Schools, Kabir Dodo, mandates compliance by all public, private, and community schools.

Kebbi State also approved a Sallah holiday starting today, with schools expected to resume on Sunday, June 15.

In a circular signed by Director of Quality Assurance, Abubakar Jabbo, the ministry urged parents to ensure prompt return of their wards.

In Sokoto, although an official circular is yet to be released, findings by our correspondent reveal that most private schools have already commenced the break.

The state Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education is expected to issue a circular by Wednesday.

Public Relations Officer of the ministry, Ibrahim Iya Moi, said, “We have not received an official communication yet, but there is a strong indication that schools will close starting Thursday.”
