The Lagos State Government has decried the use of sub-standard materials by building contractors, saying it poses high risks to lives and investments.

This is just as it has charged engineers on collective and deliberate professional contributions in averting building disasters across Lagos State.

The General Manager of the Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory Agency, Olayinka Abdul made the call while speaking to a team of executive members of the Nigerian Institute of Builders in her Office.

According to a statement by the spokesperson of the Agency, Salehu-Badejo Abimbola, on Wednesday, the LSMTL general manager called for a working synergy amongst all construction professionals in curbing all forms of mediocrity that aggravate episodes of building collapse in Lagos State, saying understanding bits of every specialisation gives germane craftsmanship.

She said “There is need for a systematic coordination amongst specialists in the built industry for all construction of structures. This enhances proficiency for optimal satisfaction.

“If all Architects, Geologists, Civil Engineers among others. have a streamlined dossier of collaborations, the episodes of buildings’ collapse will be effectively averted because they will all contribute towards ascertaining durable structures,“ she opined

While reiterating on need to ensure a communal interest of specialists for all structures, the general manager averred that lack of proper scrutiny on jobs has engendered decadence in their implementations to the extent of such structures caving in.

She maintained that the “use of sub-standard materials poses high risks to lives and investments, hence, the need for adherence to regulations that govern the construction industry, especially as it relates with specific purposes for construction, whether for residential or commercial purposes.”

In his address, the President, NIOB; Bldr Adeoye Thomas, expressed concern about the incessant incidences of building collapse in Lagos State.

He said, “With the aggressive nature which Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory Agency currently employs upon assumption to office of the General Manager, Abdul, there will be proper order of working for optimal performance.“

Also speaking, the Past- Past President of NIOB, Engr. Adenike Saeed applauded the antecedents of the General Manager for her absolute commitment and credibility in exuding enviable leadership skills toward representing women folk at the helms of affairs.

She enthused “Being a woman at the helms of Affairs as the first female General Manager is applaudable, one status depicting your capability and integrity exhibited so far. We believe with streams of professionals working with you, your strict professional regimentation is certainly on the path to giving LSMTL its deserving space in the built industry. It’s a huge congratulations on the appointment in the right order.“

The courtesy visit was marked by the presence of all NIOB Executives, proffering a soft reminder of its upcoming Annual General Meeting to be attended by six certified builders of the Agency.
