The Niger State Police Command has assured residents of the state of their safety despite the recent uncovering and destruction of explosive devices.
The command spokesman, Wasiu Abiodun, gave the assurance on Tuesday night in a statement in which he said there was no critical threat of any kind targeted at any public area or infrastructure in Niger State.
Abiodun was reacting to the uncovering of bombs and Improvised Explosive Devices by the police and other security agencies in some local government areas in the state which were later destroyed.
“The Niger State Police Command wishes to respond to misinformation spreading over some social media indicating that multiple IEDs discovered posed a critical security threat in the state, which is untrue and it’s pure misinformation
“The command, therefore, states with all sense of responsibility that the IEDs recently destroyed by the police command in the interest of public safety, were the improvised materials recovered within the year 2021 and 2022 during joint counter-insurgency operations in the forest of the Shiroro LGA.
“Therefore, the prolonged keeping of these materials posed a danger to lives and property around, hence, the reason for the immediate destruction as undertaken by the command.
“Contrary to the assertion in the false publication, there is no critical threat of any kind targeted at any public area or infrastructure in Niger State to cause fear and widespread instability, as this is seen as a calculated attempt to cause panic and unnecessary fear in the public domain.”
The statement quoted the Commissioner of Police in Niger State, Shawulu Danmamman, as urging “the good people of the state should continue with their lawful businesses without fear of any threat, as the police and sisters’ security agencies are committed and dedicated to the service of protection of lives and property within the state and beyond.”
