In a bid to improve security and ease of identification, the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Region 52, has embarked on a house renumbering initiative across streets in Surulere, Lagos, where its regional headquarters is located.
The initiative, which forms part of the church’s broader community engagement programme, was flagged off over the weekend alongside a health walk aimed at promoting healthy living.
Speaking during the launch, Pastor-in-Charge of the Region, Olaniyan Samuel, said the move to renumber homes became necessary after a survey showed that most buildings had missing or faded numbers, making identification difficult for residents and emergency responders.
Olaniyan said, “You would discover that one of the major thrusts of our church now is not just preaching the gospel but also impacting the lives of people in our immediate environment.
“We looked at the streets where we are located and found that most houses either had faded numbers or no numbers at all. So we engaged with the Community Development Association (CDA) and street associations, shared our intention, and got their approval to embark on a full-scale renumbering exercise.”
The cleric said the initiative, combined with regular health-focused programmes such as walks and fitness campaigns, aligns with the RCCG’s global corporate social responsibility policy.
“CSR activities are a policy in RCCG. We have a dedicated department and a Senior Assistant to the General Overseer for CSR matters. Globally, we’ve invested billions of naira in interventions—ranging from health and road infrastructure to schools, food distribution, and support for disadvantaged groups,” he said.
Olaniyan stressed that healthy living would remain a recurring theme in the church’s outreach efforts, urging Nigerians of all ages to embrace age-appropriate exercise for improved well-being.
Community leaders who participated in the exercise commended the church for its consistent support.
Chairman of Fefooraad Community Development Association, Abel Oluwaseun, lauded RCCG Region 52 for what he described as sustained efforts to give back to the neighbourhood.
“On behalf of my exco and the entire community, we sincerely thank RCCG Garden of Peace, Region 52, under Pastor S.B. Olaniyan, and the CSR chairman, Pastor Joseph. They’ve done road cleanups in the past and have always shown concern for the welfare of our people,” he said.
Similarly, Chairman of the Falolu Residents’ Association, Ademuyiwa Dina, noted the practical impact of the renumbering project.
“Many house numbers had worn out over the years, and the church stepped in to help make them visible again. This will improve accessibility and security. We are grateful to RCCG and pray for continued growth for the church and its leaders,” Dina added.
