Management of Kwara State University, KWASU, Malete, has indicated readiness to comply with the one-year suspension of the law programme in the institution by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB. DAILY POST recalls that JAMB had in a statement on Wednesday announced that it will not be conducting admissions for the law programme in eight selected universities, including KWASU, following the suspension of the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme by the Council of Legal Education, CLE, for the 2025/2026 academic session. Reacting, the management of the institution explained in a statement by the Acting Director, University Relations, Dr Saeedat Aliyu, in Ilorin on Wednesday that: “JAMB’s announcement of a 1-year ban on admission into KWASU’s law programme is as a result of the decision of the Council for Legal Education (CLE) to sanction KWASU for commencing the law programme in 2018 with only the approval of the National Universities Commission (NUC). “KWASU currently has full accreditation from both the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Council for Legal Education (CLE) to run 2 undergraduate law programmes: Common Law and Common and Islamic Law. “Management wishes to state that the 1-year ban does not in any way affect students currently running their programmes in the University’s Faculty of Law. “Kwara State University holds all regulatory institutions in very high regard and will comply with the sanctions imposed by CLE by not offering admission into the two law programmes in the coming 2025/2026 admission session.” The management advised prospective candidates into the law programmes to apply to other equally excellent programmes offered by KWASU as all programmes in the institution have all the required accreditations.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Board of Trustees, BoT, on Wednesday set machinery in place to resolve the crisis over the position of the party’s National Secretary.

PDP BoT set up a committee led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki to interface with the parties, study the situation and report to the Board for further action.

There is a contest between Samuel Anyanwu and Sunday Ude-Okoye over who occupies the position of PDP’s National Secretary.

The position became contentious after Anyanwu left to contest the Imo State governorship election which he lost.

Upon his return, Ude-Okoye was endorsed by the party to fill up the position.

On December 20, 2024, an Appeal Court in Enugu upheld the decision of a High Court removing Anyanwu as PDP’s Secretary and affirming Ude-Okoye as the authentic Secretary.

However, during a communique issued at the end of its 79th meeting, the BoT said: “The Board of Trustees at its 79th meeting today, Wednesday, January 29, 2025, critically assessed the State of affairs of the Nation and the Party and resolved as follows:

“The BoT expresses serious concerns over the unresolved challenges facing the Party especially as related to the disagreements within the National Working Committee (NWC).

“The BoT calls on the members of the NWC, all Organs, leaders and critical stakeholders of our Party across board to rise above personal, group or sectional interests and place the stability, unity, sustenance and progress of our Party and its ideals above all other considerations.

“In the effort to resolve the current crisis over the position of the National Secretary of the Party, which is presently before the Courts, the BoT set up a committee led by Barr Kabiru Tanimu Turaki SAN to interface with the parties, study the situation and report to the Board for further action.

“The Acting National Chairman assured the BoT that the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting will hold as scheduled in scheduled in February 2025 to address all pertinent issues and reaffirm our shared commitment to the unity, discipline, and ideals that bind us together as members of the PDP.”
