The Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, has said those angling to displace President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 are more or less self-seeking individuals who do not mean well for the country.
Okechukwu said this in a telephone interview with The PUNCH in Abuja on Sunday.
He explained that although the President had yet to declare interest in seeking re-election, the interest of Nigeria would be better served if he was given an opportunity to consolidate on the gains so far recorded since he assumed office in 2015.
According to him, President Buhari still has a lot to offer Nigeria and Nigerians even as he turned 75 on Sunday.
Okechukwu observed that divine intervention, which led to the President’s ascension to power, led to his miraculous recovery from an unnamed ailment and his recent attainment of the age of 75.
He argued that few Nigerians would query why millions of Nigerians had cause to celebrate with the President and his family.
The DG said, “In recent times, one had never seen Nigerians collectively united as we did in prayers, especially when he returned from the medical trip abroad and went back. To be honest, in the midst of those troubling sick months, we were worried to the marrow and it was as if Nigeria was sick.
“For this, I rededicate my faith in Almighty God and glorify His name, as it demonstrated that nothing is impossible in the hands of God.
“In sum, one is praying for more years for Mr. President, so as to consolidate this laudable programme of sanitising the system and laying the solid foundation for an industrial society.
“It is crucial for Nigerians to vote for him (in 2019). Those who are clamouring to displace him are more or less self-serving.”
Okechukwu recalled how the late President of the Senate, Chuba Okadigbo, predicted sometime in 2002 that the entrance of the then General Muhammadu Buhari into Nigeria’s political space would change the nation’s political landscape.
